An American living in Switzerland by the name of Irving Dunn got in touch in January 2015 to provide a fresh insight.
His father-in-law was a Luftwaffe pilot who retired to the family farm midway through the war. It was he who sheltered POW Peter Conder and other escapees in the closing stages of the war.
Gustav Venema had been a strong anti-Nazi and when POWs came on parole walks to his farm, he promised them shelter should they escape from their captors. This remarkable man kept his word, at great risk to himself.
